Werewolves (2024)

The werewolves are the primary antagonistic entity of The Quarry. They are humans who, because of a curse, are forced to turn into bloodthirsty monsters every full moon.

History[]

The original bearer of the curse and progenitor of all werewolves is Silas Vorez, who worked as one of the freaks in the sideshow "Harum Scarum" run by his mother Eliza. When the show was staying in North Kill in 2015, Kaylee and Caleb Hackett, Chris Hackett's children, decided to set Silas free and started a fire as a distraction. However, the fire got out of hand and caused the entire show to burn with the crew, except for Silas, who managed to escape into the woods. Before that, he bit Caleb, who in turn passed the curse to his sister and father. Subsequently, the Hackett family hunted Silas every full moon for six years in an attempt to break the curse.

Appearance[]

The werewolves are tall and gangly creatures, completely bald and without any sexual characteristics. Their skin is dirty gray and taut against their bodies. Their limbs are long and thin, with equally long claws. Werewolves exhibit spinal disfiguration, giving them a hunchback-like appearance and allowing them to move effectively as both humans and animals. All werewolves have pointed ears and a lipless mouth, exposing canine fangs and a long tongue.

Older werewolves (such as Silas and Caleb) have more wolf-like features (noticeably pointed ears and elongated muzzle) and red eyes, while the younger ones retain a humanoid head shape and have either yellow, white or black eyes. Silas also has white skin instead of black due to albinism.

An infected human soon after infection will have a yellow hue in their eyes and a row of sharp teeth. The skin will be pale with visible dark veins and black patches will appear around the eyes. When transformed into a werewolf and back into a human, the infected one will "explode" with blood. Clothing is retained in both forms, but after transformation it becomes ripped and stretched.

Characteristics[]

Werewolves have increased physical characteristics. Despite weak and frail appearance, they are quite strong and can throw people with ease, as well as tough and can withstand several regular shots from a shotgun. Werewolves move quickly on two legs and become significantly faster when moving on all four. The older werewolves are shown to be vastly superior to the younger ones; for example, Silas is able to catch up to a car at high speed and Caleb recovers quickly after being crushed by a car or container. Werewolves have delicate hearing and can even hear the breath of their victims, though at the same time, their hearing is their weakness, as werewolves can be scared away by a high-pitched sound.

Anyone infected, after some time after being infected, begins to manifest werewolf abilities, such as regeneration and increased strength. Also, the infected become more resilient and are able to survive wounds that are fatal to a normal human; infected Kaitlyn survives a fall from a beam and being crushed by a container while as a normal human she doesn't. At the same time, the infected, in addition to gradually changing their appearance, begin to lose control of their negative emotions and become more aggressive. Depending on their personality in human form, they can also become spiteful, frustrated, irrational, irritable, self-loathing, or very worried. The infected don't retain the memory of their actions as a werewolf upon reverting back to human, although in rare cases this can be. When Laura suffered a gouged eye due to Max's attack as a werewolf, at a later point a human Max admitted responsibility saying he was aware of what he did to her as a werewolf.

Most werewolves, mostly the younger ones, have the intelligence of a wild animal and can be easily caught in a simple booby trap. Also all werewolves, including the older ones, never attack people they take for their own. This can be achieved either by smearing one's face with werewolf blood, as their human scent becomes concealed or by becoming infected, though in the latter case the infestation must be advanced. Werewolves have an extreme aversion to water, refusing in almost all circ*mstances to come in contact with it. They can be hindered/slowed down by regular bullets, but can only be killed by silver bullets or other silver weapons.They are also averse to silver in general: Emma is able to ward off werewolf Jacob with a silver bracelet.

The only way to break the curse on a person is to kill the werewolf that bit him/her or any other werewolf standing higher in the chain. However, the main condition is that this can only be done during the full moon.

The Quarry[]

Prologue[]

The night Laura and Max drive to Hackett's Quarry, something (which turns out to be Silas) runs out onto the road in front of them, prompting the couple to drive off the route into the woods. As Max fixes the car, Laura follows the female silhouette deeper into the woods, where unknowingly she can find Silas' lair in the ruins of "Harum Scarum".

Upon arriving at the camp, Laura notices a mysterious figure in a closed bunker. Thinking they need help, the two go down there, but Max is attacked and bitten by an unknown creature. The creature attacks Max again as the pair try to escape from the bunker but is stopped by Travis.

Chapter 3[]

The first two werewolves the counselors encounter are Caleb and Kaylee. Caleb attacks Nick and Abigail when the two are secluded in the woods and manages to bite the former when Bobby shoots and scares him away from the couple. Abigail runs back to camp for help and the other werewolf starts chasing her. Abby manages to escape the werewolf, but can end up wounded by it in the process.

Chapter 4[]

While the counselors carry the injured Nick to the lodge, Emma, left alone by Jacob, swims to an island in the middle of the lake. Upon reaching the tree house, she notices someone violently banging into a trapdoor. After opening the trapdoor, Emma is attacked by a werewolf and a chase ensues. Trying to escape from the werewolf, Emma is killed in one of many situations or successfully escapes from the island back to the main land in a zipline. During the chase, Emma may either be bitten trying to hide in the tree house or scratched trying to escape on the zipline.

Chapter 5[]

As the counselors try to contact help at the radio hut, they are attacked by Silas.

• If Abigail broke into the cabin in Chapter 1, her group will manage to hide inside before Silas notices them, causing him to continue stalking Dylan and Ryan. As Dylan tries to plug the wire for the speaker, Silas attacks him and bites Dylan's arm. The boys manage to scare off the werewolf, but Ryan is forced to decide whether or not to amputate Dylan's arm.
• If Abigail didn't break into to the cabin, it will take longer for her group to hide. During that time, Silas will notice the trio and turn his attention to them. Ryan goes outside and confronts the werewolf until Dylan scares him off with a high-pitched sound.

In any case, as Silas escapes, the group notices a girl who is later revealed to be Laura. She's off-screen chases someone and shoots them with silver bullets in the pool. When the counselors arrive at the pool, it turns out that Laura has shot werewolf Kaylee.

Chapter 6[]

After Emma escapes from the island, she is reunited with Jacob in the woods. However, the reunion doesn't last long as werewolf Caleb immediately begins to chase the couple. On the bridge, Jacob accidentally pushes Emma into the water, and continues to run away alone.During the chase, Caleb either kills Jacob (unless his face is covered in blood during Chapter 3) or bites him and then hides in the woods.

Meanwhile, the counselors begin to notice Nick's strange behavior, such as aggression and fear of water. It ends with Nick throwing Abigail across the room and, after transforming into a werewolf, decapitating her unless Abigail shoots him. Either way, werewolf Nick escapes into the woods, leaving the rest of the counselors in shock.

Back to Emma, she gets out of the woods and returns to the lodge, where she hides in the van. On the way, she spots Bobby and Jedediah catching werewolf Nick. At the same time, Caleb watches all three from a distance and may attack Emma if she chooses to run. If Emma didn't take the fireworks in Chapter 2 or she failed to use them, she will be bitten.

Chapter 7[]

As revealed in the flashbacks, after Travis rescued Laura and Max from the werewolf, who turns out to be Chris, he locked them in a police station. While in jail, Max transforms into a werewolf twice - the first time on June 25, a few hours after his infection, and the second time on July 23, when he attacks Laura, tied to a pipe next to his cage, and scratches out her left eye. The next day, Travis tells the couple about the werewolf curse and they learn that Max can only be healed by killing Chris.

On August 23, Laura and Max manage to escape from the police station. Heading to camp, Laura leaves Max on the island so he won't hurt anyone else while she goes hunting for Chris. After killing Kaylee, Laura, thinking she shot Chris, returns to the island to check on Max, but finds him still turned into a werewolf. Laura successfully escapes from him, but is bitten in the process.

As Laura tells her story to the counselors, werewolf Nick is shown locked in a cage in the basem*nt of the Hackett house.

Chapter 8[]

If Emma was infected in Chapter 4, she will turn into a werewolf while hiding in the van and attack Kaitlyn, Dylan and Abigail when they attempt to leave the camp. During the confrontation, Emma first tries to kill Abi and then Dylan, but Kaitlyn manages to either shoot the werewolf with a silver bullet, killing Emma, or scaring her off into the woods with a regular shot.

Meanwhile, Ryan and Laura sneak into the basem*nt of the Hackett house, where they find werewolf Nick, whom Laura can shoot, mistaking him for Chris. If Jacob is alive, the two find him as well. Ryan can try to help him escape, but accidentally can free Nick from his cage, causing him to kill Jacob, unless he is infected.

Chapter 9[]

Trying to find a new vehicle or parts for the van at the junkyard, Kaitlyn and Dylan are tracked down and attacked by werewolf Silas:

• If Dylan is alive, Silas will attack Kaitlyn as she hides in the car and Dylan will have to throw the werewolf off it. He can do this either by slamming the car or sounding the horn, but in the second case Dylan will draw Silas' attention to himself and will have to fight off the werewolf, which could lead to his death. If Dylan has successfully scared off Silas, he will try to attack Kaitlyn again and may bite her, but either way, Dylan will drop the car on him. If Dylan was infected in Chapter 5, after defeating Silas he will turn into a werewolf while Kaitlyn escapes.
• If Dylan is dead, Kaitlyn will have to confront Silas alone. She can do this either by shooting the werewolf or by hiding from him in the car, but in the second case Kaitlyn will have to hide successfully or she will be bitten. Either way, Kaitlyn will have to drop the container on Silas or she will be killed.

If Emma was infected in Chapter 6, upon finding the ladder leading to Chris' office, she will turn into a werewolf. If Abigail is alive, she will have to climb the ladder before Werewolf Emma captures her. Other decisions result in Abigail's death.

Meanwhile, Laura and Ryan, after a confrontation against Jedediah, Constance and Bobby, find werewolf Chris. Chris goes off the chain and attacks the two and his relatives. At the same time, Laura also turns into a werewolf and attacks Travis. The skirmish can end with Ryan shooting Chris and all the werewolves in his line being healed, including Laura and possibly Ryan, or Chris killing Ryan and Travis and Laura killing each other. If Chris is dead, Ryan, Laura and Travis are alive and the latter two have a good relationship, Travis will tell them that to completely break the werewolf curse they have to kill Silas and the trio will go looking for him.

Chapter 10[]

If Chris is killed, Max, cured of the curse, will turn back into a man. He goes ashore, where he decides to stay on the island or swim to the main land. However, if Max swims to the main land, upon his arrival he will be caught and killed by werewolf Caleb.

If Jacob is alive, he will spend the rest of the night in the woods.

• If Chris is alive, he will hunt Jacob down and attack him. While trying to escape from the werewolf, Jacob notices a booby trap and must use it to catch Chris. Other decisions will result in Jacob's death.
• If Jacob was infected in chapter 6, he will turn into a werewolf. If Emma is near him (can be achieved if she was infected in Chapter 4, Kaitlyn didn't kill her and Chris is dead), Jacob will attack and kill Emma, unless he has a silver bracelet that Emma uses to scare off the werewolf.

If Kaitlyn is alive, she and possibly Dylan return to the lodge, where they are attacked again by the werewolf Caleb. A chase begins, in which Kaitlyn and Dylan can die in different ways, or Kaitlyn manages to defeat Caleb, either by shooting him with silver bullets or by locking him in a freezer.

If Laura, Ryan and Travis are alive, they will go to the place where Laura and Max crashed in the prologue, as there is Silas' lair. On the way, the trio is attacked by Silas himself and trying to throw the werewolf off the car, there may be an accident in which all four characters may die. After successfully repelling the werewolf's attack, the trio follows him and finds him recovering from his wounds. Laura can shoot Silas, ending the werewolf's curse, or be spared, causing Silas to kill the entire trio.

Silas Vorez[]

The Progenitor of the Curse/Transformed

Silas is the progenitor of all werewolves, though it is unknown how he got the curse. Either way, due to this, he worked at "Harum Scarum" as one of the entertainment. During the fire, Silas bit Caleb, who freed him from the cage, and fled into the woods, but then returned to show's ruins, making them his lair. For six years, Silas successfully hid from the Hackett family, who tried to kill him to break the curses on Caleb, Chris, and Kaylee. This was until August 2021, when Silas can be tracked down by Travis, Ryan, and Laura, the latter of whom can shoot him, ending the werewolf curse forever.

Caleb Hackett[]

Infected/Transformed/Can be cured

Caleb became a werewolf when, during the fire at "Harum Scarum", he freed Silas, who bit him. That same night, Caleb bit Kaylee and Chris, forcing the trio to live with the curse for the next six years. During the events of the game, Caleb and his sister left Hackett's Quarry to prepare for another transformation, but still, as werewolves, returned to the camp.

Caleb is responsible for most of the attacks on the counselors, including Nick and Abigail, Jacob and Emma, and Kaitlyn and Dylan. With the last two, he has one confrontation (at the lodge), which can lead to his death. Caleb can be freed from the curse if he is not killed by Kaitlyn, and Laura kills Silas.

Chris Hackett[]

Infected/Transformed

Chris became a werewolf when, during the fire at "Harum Scarum", he and Kaylee were bitten by Caleb, who was bitten by Silas. The trio was forced to live with the curse for six years, which they successfully coped with. However, in June 2021, Chris was waiting out a full moon in the storm shelter at Hackett's Quarry when Laura and Max arrived at the camp. Chris attacked the couple and infected Max, but was stopped by Travis before he could kill them.

Two months later, in August, when the counselors were unable to leave camp in time due to a broken van, Chris went to wait out the full moon at his family home, where Laura and Ryan find him. The duo tries to kill Chris to heal Max and their mission could end in success, with Ryan shooting Chris, or in failure, with Chris escaping into the woods. Chris can be freed from the curse if Kaitlyn kills Caleb, although the Epilogue doesn't acknowledge this fact.

Kaylee Hackett[]

Infected/Transformed

Kaylee became a werewolf when, during the fire at "Harum Scarum", she and Chris were bitten by Caleb, who was bitten by Silas. The trio was forced to live with the curse for six years, which they successfully coped with. During the events of the game, Kaylee and her brother left Hackett's Quarry to prepare for another transformation, but still, as werewolves, returned to the camp. She had little part in the main events as almost immediately after appearing, Kaylee was shot by Laura, who mistook her for werewolf Chris. However, before this she can infect Abigail, who will always be cured due to Kaylee's death.

Max Brinly[]

Max becomes infected in the Prologue, when he and Laura are attacked by werewolf Chris upon arrival at Hackett's Quarry. Although the couple is rescued by Travis, he imprisons them at the police station, where Max transforms two times: the first time on the same night he was cursed (June 25), and the second time on July 23, when he scratches Laura's eye out.

When on August 23 the couple managed to escape to the camp, Max stayed on the island so that he wouldn't hurt anyone. However, the plan failed when Emma got to the island, unaware of the danger. Max, already turned into a werewolf, attacks Emma and can either kill or infect her as she flees the island. Max also infects Laura when she comes to check on him after killing Kaylee, whom she mistook for Chris. Max can be freed from the curse if Ryan kills Chris or Kaitlyn kills Caleb.

Nick Furcillo[]

Infected/Transformed/Can be cured

Nick becomes infected in Chapter 3 when he and Abigail are attacked by werewolf Caleb as the couple was alone in the woods. Although Nick was rescued by Ryan from Bobby, he became fully infected and turned into a werewolf after a while. Right after the transformation (and possibly killing Abigail), Nick escapes into the woods, where he is caught by Bobby and Jedediah. Nick is then locked in an electric cage in the Hacketts' basem*nt, where he may kill Jacob or be shot by Laura. After Laura shuts down the cages, he escapes into the woods for the rest of the night. Nick will be free of the curse if Kaitlyn kills Caleb or Laura kills Silas.

Abigail Blyg[]

Can be infected/Always cured

Abigail can be infected by werewolf Kaylee while running after the others for help in Chapter 3. Her only shown symptoms are the healing of her wounds, and forcefully pushing Bobby away from her with remarkable strength after she's grabbed by him in Chapter 5, should Nick fail the Don't Breathe QTE, or choose to run. She is always cured by the end of chapter 5, when Laura kills Kaylee.

Bobby Hackett[]

Can be infected/Avoided total infection

Bobby can be infected by Nick when he bites his finger in Chapter 3. However, he immediately shoots off the infected finger, avoiding full infection.

Emma Mountebank[]

Can be infected/Can transform/Can be cured

Emma can be infected either in Chapter 4 while escaping from werewolf Max or Chapter 6 while running from werewolf Caleb.

• If Emma was infected in Chapter 4, she will turn into a werewolf in the minivan by Chapter 8 and attack Kaitlyn, Dylan, and Abigail when they return to the lodge. During the confrontation, Emma can kill Abi or Dylan (whom Emma can also infect), be shot (fatally or non-fatally) by Kaitlyn, or escape into the woods. Emma will be free of the curse if Ryan kills Chris or Kaitlyn kills Caleb.
• If Emma was infected in Chapter 6, she will turn into a werewolf in the lodge storm shelter in Chapter 9 and try to kill Abigail. Emma will be free of the curse if Kaitlyn kills Caleb or Laura kills Silas.

Dylan Lenivy[]

Can be infected (can avoid total infection)/Can transform/Can be cured

Dylan can be infected either in Chapter 5 or Chapter 9 while confronting Silas, or Chapter 8 by werewolf Emma.

• If Dylan was infected in Chapter 5, he can avoid full infection if Ryan amputates his bitten hand. If Dylan's hand was not amputated, he will turn into a werewolf in the scrapyard's crane in Chapter 9 after a fight with werewolf Silas. Dylan will be free of the curse if Laura kills Silas.
• If Dylan was infected in Chapter 8, he will never turn into a werewolf, but will have protection against Silas and werewolf Caleb in the next two chapters. Dylan will be free of the curse if Kaitlyn kills Emma or Caleb, Ryan kills Chris, or Laura kills Silas.
• If Dylan was infected in Chapter 9, he will never turn into a werewolf, but will have protection against werewolf Caleb in the final chapter. Dylan will be free of the curse if Laura kills Silas.

Jacob Custos[]

Can be infected/Can transform/Can be cured

Jacob can be infected in Chapter 6 while running away from werewolf Caleb. He turns into a werewolf in Chapter 10 after escaping from the Hackett House and will decapitate Emma if the pair meet and Jacob isn't wearing her silver bracelet. Jacob will be free of the curse if Kaitlyn kills Caleb or Laura kills Silas.

Laura Kearney[]

Infected/Transformed/Can be cured

Laura becomes infected in Chapter 7 when, after killing Kaylee, whom Laura mistook for Chris, she returns to the island, where she is bitten by werewolf Max. Laura turns into a werewolf in Chapter 9, but almost immediately either heals when Ryan shoots Chris or dies when Ryan shoots her or Travis stabs her with a shard of silver mirror.

Ryan Erzahler[]

Can be infected/Can be cured

Ryan can be infected in Chapter 8 when he accepts Laura's bite after learning that without becoming a werewolf, he will die of blood loss. Ryan never turns into a werewolf as he either kills werewolf Chris or werewolf Laura and is cured, or is killed by Chris.

Kaitlyn Ka[]

Can be infected/Can be cured

Kaitlyn can be infected in Chapter 9 while confronting werewolf Silas at the scrapyard. She will never turn into a werewolf, but will have protection against Caleb in the next chapter. Kaitlyn will be free of the curse if Laura kills Silas.

• All protagonists can be divided into three groups of three characters each:
  • Max, Nick and Laura are the only protagonists who always get infected and turn into werewolves.
  • Emma, Dylan, and Jacob are the only protagonists who can get infected and able to turn into werewolves.
  • Abigail, Ryan, and Kaitlyn are the only protagonists who can get infected, but never turn into werewolves. The former is because she is always cured, and the latter two is because they get infected too late to transform.
• Dylan and Emma are the only protagonists who can become infected in several chapters.
• Dylan and Bobby are the only characters who can avoid full infection by amputating the infected body part.
• Emma is the only character who can be bitten by both Max and Caleb in one playthrough.
• Nick is the only protagonist who cannot be killed by the werewolves.
• The werewolves share certain similarities with the antagonists of Supermassive's previous horror titles, the Wendigos from Until Dawn and the Vampires from The Dark Pictures Anthology's House of Ashes.
  • All three are tall humanoids with enhanced physical parameters, though the werewolves have more similarities to the Wendigos, as they both remotely resemble humans.
  • Humans can transform into all three under different circ*mstances. Additionally, the werewolves share curses with Wendigos and infections with Vampires at the same time.
  • All three have incredible strength, usually able to use it to brutally kill a protagonist.
• Abigail is the only character who can be infected by Kaylee, shown by Abigail having no symptoms of infection after Kaylee's demise.
